Atticus was eight. Travel ball. He made the roster — barely.
First game of the season. The coach pulled the team aside before the national anthem. In front of every parent. In front of everyone.
He told them that some kids wouldn't play today. Said it directly to the group. A few of the younger players. Atticus was one of them. They wanted to win, and these kids were in the way of that.
So Atticus sat on the bench in his uniform. Glove on his lap. Cleats tight. Watching.
The team lost 10-0. Run rule. Three innings. Not a single hit.
No one who was sitting on that bench with Atticus ever took the field that day.
